Wellbeing & Protection

Garioch ASC and Scottish Swimming are committed to promoting the wellbing of athletes, to allow them to enjoy a positive experience within our sport, encouraging lifetime participation.

We are also committed to providing continuous support, training and guidance to our volunteers within this area.  Remember, it is not just the athletes that we want to protect, it is ourselves too.

It is a constitutional requirement for all clubs to appoint a Wellbeing & Protection Officer (WPO).  The WPO communicates useful information, training opportuities and changes in legislation to our club.

GASC's Wellbeing and Protection Officers are:

  • Fiona Searle
  • Claire Rae

Both can be contacted directly on: [email protected]

PVGs and CWPS

The Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme helps ensure people whose behaviour makes them unsuitable to work with children and protected adults cannot do regulated work with these vulnerable groups.

The Child Wellbing and Protection in Sport (CWPS) supersedes the previous Safeguarding and Protecting Children (SPC) course.  The training, run by SportScotland, provides you with knowledge on child wellbeing and protection that will give you the confidence to deal with issues that may arise in your role working with children.

It is the responsibility of our club to ensure all persons (paid or voluntary) who work with vulnerable groups (chilren and protected adults) are suitable to do so and that we follow the Safe Recruitment Process.  Part of the safe recruitment process is ensuring all people within the club in a regulated role have both a PVG and CWPS in place.

So who needs a PVG and CWPS?

Not everyone in our club requires them, only those who have roles that comes under the definition of regulated work.  Currently our regulated roles include:

Chaperone - Charity Trustee - Coach - COVID Officer - Driver - Land Trainer - Lifeguard - Marshal - Meet Manager - Mentor - Poolside Helper / Assistant - President / Chair - Referee - Swimming Teacher - Team Manager - Wellbeing and Protection Officer

As a Club we also ensure that all volunteers in our 'Key' or 'Named' Roles have a PVG and have completed a Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport (CWPS) course.  It is crucial that as many people as possible have completed both processes, to enable us to run our training and meets safely and within the Scottish Swimming guidelines.

You will need to complete a CWPS course (provided free through Scottish Swimming) before you can apply for your PVG.  Please speak to one of our WPOs.
