GARIOCH
come 10th overall
Garioch Amateur Swimming Club sent a group of
swimmers to the
Scottish National Age Group Championships (SNAGS) which were held
over four days 8th – 11th April at Tollcross, Glasgow. The team
included Andrew Bryce, Thomas Holmes, Alastair Miley, Joseph Miley,
Greig Rennie, David Smith, William Walker, Orla Adams, Hannah Craig,
Jemma Grant, Emily Jones, Lois Milne, Sarah Smith and Phoebe
Whitehead who had all qualified to swim at this prestigious meet.
Hamish Cooper, Peter Holmes, Matthew Smith, Nicole Mowat and Haillie
Wilson also travelled down to compete in the Relay events.
Emily Jones (14) headed into the finals as fastest
qualifier in
all her heats to win a staggering 10 gold medals for 100m
breaststroke, 200m IM, 400m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 200m
breaststroke, 800m freestyle, 200m fly, 100m freestyle, 100m fly and
400m IM. Other medal winners included Orla Adams (15) who did
an impressive swim to take silver in the 400m IM and also 2 bronze
medals in the 200m breaststroke and 200m backstroke. Alastair
Miley (15) was fastest qualifier in his heat and went on to take
silver in the 200m backstroke. Joseph Miley (12) also took silver in
the 200m backstroke and achieved a well deserved gold medal in the
400m IM. Greig Rennie (15) qualified fourth in the 200m
breaststroke heat and then went on to win a bronze medal in the
final.
It was a great achievement to see many of the
swimmers make at
least one final. The distance swimmers namely Phoebe Whitehead (15)
and Lois Milne (12) competed in the 1500m freestyle where they
narrowly missed out on a medal taking fourth place, but gained great
PBs. Andrew Bryce (14) gained a well deserved fifth position in
the qualifying and final of the 100m freestyle whilst Jemma Grant
(12) had excellent placings in the 400m freestyle and 400m IM
events. For some of our swimmers this was their First National
Final. Thomas Holmes (14) qualified fourth in the 200m breaststroke,
Sarah Smith (15) qualified for the 200m fly final and Hannah Craig
(14) made the finals of the breaststroke. The Relay events were
quite spectacular and highlighted the team spirit at the meet.
David Smith (17) swam a superb fly leg in the 400 Medley Relay as did
Nicole (12) and Haillie (12) in the 800 and 400 Free Relay Lead Off.
Garioch finished 10th overall, out of 83 competing
Clubs. A great
achievement!
Ultimately, this event could not have taken place
without the
excellent coaching support of Patrick Miley and Gitte Whitehead and
all the poolside helpers.

to haul in the medals. The following won in their age groups:
Hannah Craig (14) gold medals
for 200m and
50m freestyle, 200m and 50m breaststroke, silver medals for 200m and
50m fly. Thomas Holmes (14) 5th place medals for 200m freestyle and

Jemma Grant also managed to keep her competitors at bay by swimming a
blinder in the 400m IM Open event to collect a much deserved bronze
medal.
Whilst many PB’s were gained
along the way,
with excellent support from all the teammates and their coach Helen
Smith, the highlight of the meet was Hannah Craig being awarded the
PLATE for BEST GIRL 14/15 years
Edinburgh
International Age Group Championships (Feb 10)
Results
Garioch Amateur Swimming Club travelled to the Edinburgh
International Age Group Championships 13th to 14th February. This was
their first ‘team’ event since the pool closure but despite the 5am
departure from Inverurie their spirits were high. The team of sixteen
swimmers comprising Orla Adams, Andrew Bryce, Hannah Craig, Jemma
Grant, Thomas Holmes, Peter Holmes, Hazel Johnston, Emily Jones,
Alastair Miley, Joseph Miley, Lois Milne, Greig Rennie, David Smith,
William Walker, Phoebe Whitehead and Haillie Wilson did not disappoint.
They still managed to collectively gain an approximate 75% strike rate
increase thus proving that the recent change in their training
programme did not seem to affect their performance.
Emily Jones, true to form, took a medal haul of 6 golds and 1 bronze
with Orla Adams picking up a bronze in the 100m breaststroke.
Joseph Miley’s superb performance in the 100m backstroke earned him a
silver medal. The PB’s were evident across the board particularly
with Hannah, Jemma and Thomas in the fly events and also Greig and Lois
in the 200IM event. The newcomers to the ‘team’ event, Hazel and
Haille, swam excellently and got their first LC times on record.
The team management and coaching support was enthusiastically achieved
by an experienced group of coaches and chaperones, namely Gitte
Whitehead, Anne Smith, Garry Holmes, David Bryce, and Manivanh Bryce.
Their contribution to this ‘team’ event was invaluable and reflected in
the team spirit and tremendous successes that were witnessed by all.
Peterhead Graded Meet (Feb 10)
Results
A small team of Garioch
Swimmers attended the
Peterhead Graded Meet (On Tour) at Banff Swimming
Pool last weekend. Molly
Carlier, Hamish
Cooper, Clara Douglas, Findlay Douglas, Abbey Freer, Beth McIntosh,
Nicole Mowat, Owen Robinson, Matthew Smith and Jessica Thomson did
themselves proud. The honours consisted of only one medal – Beth
McIntosh took 3rd place in the girls 14 & over 100m Backstroke –
but the swimmers were delighted to take 27 personal best times from
42 swims and showed great team spirit, enthusiastically (and
noisily!) supporting their team mates.
Well done, swimmers and a big
“Thank You!”
to coach Helen Smith and team manager Gayle Mowat.

This was a chance for
a lot of our
Development and Squad 1 & 2 Swimmers to show what they had. They
competed very well and we had many medallists on the podium. PB's
were being smashed all round. All in all a great day and excellent
Team Spirit. The Garioch swimmers set the trend of cool dance moves
for their stretching exercises of which was soon picked up by the
rest of the pool as they all joined in

Garioch Bag Pack (Dec 09)
Garioch Amateur
Swimming Club are
about to undergo a period of pool closure in Inverurie and in an
effort to generate funds to see them through this period are doing a
Bagpack at Morrisons on Wednesday 23rd December. Hannah Miley the
newly crowned European Short Course 400 IM Gold Medallist will be on
hand for part of the event for photo opportunities and autograph
signing whilst packing a few bags also. The club will have to train
in 4 different locations during the closure period and would like to
thank Aberdeenshire Council along with Dyce Swimming Club for making
available alternative venues as far ranging as Alford, Huntly and
Dyce.
The closure will put a great
strain on the club in the year of the Commonwealth Games where Hannah
is hoping to compete in several events. Members of the club will be
on hand to pack people's bags between the hours of 9am -1.30pm and
will be grateful for any donation no matter how small.
NORTH
DISTRICT DISTANCE MEET - BANFF (OCT 09)
Results
GARIOCH
Amateur Swimming Club attended the two-day North District Distance Meet
at Banff Swimming Pool last weekend. They proved to be a strong team
with most of the team members gaining medals. The boys set the scene on
Saturday morning with Findlay Douglas getting a Silver medal in the
400IM (11yrs). The 14yr old boys, Andrew Bryce, Thomas Holmes and
William Walker then took the respective Gold, Silver and Bronze medals
in the 400IM. To round off this event David Smith won a Silver medal
for the 15 & over age group. It was now the girls turn. Jemma Grant
triumphed with a Gold medal in the 1500m freestyle (12yrs) and Sarah
Smith had an amazing swim and took the Silver in the 14yrs age group.
That was only the morning! The afternoon saw Joseph Miley winning a
spectacular Gold medal in the 800m freestyle (11yrs). His brother,
Alastair, not to be outdone, had a fantastic reply and took Gold in the
14yrs age group, with Andrew Bryce picking up the Silver. The girls
decided they could answer the boys gold silver bronze placings in the
400m freestyle (12yrs) with Lois Milne, Aimee Wright and Jemma Grant
taking the respective medals. Cat Freeman then took the Silver in the
14yrs age group with Hannah Craig getting a great PB. Phoebe Whitehead
(15yrs) then decided to top the day with a Gold. Aaron Brookes (13yrs)
managed to get great PB’s in the 800m freestyle and the 400mIM along
with Peter Holmes (12yrs), whilst Nicole Mowat (11yrs) gained an
impressive PB in the 400m freestyle event.
Although Sunday morning brought a contrast in the
weather, the contrast in the medal haul was not for Garioch. Lois
opened with a Silver in the 400IM, with Aimee getting a time under 6
minutes. Hannah Craig (14yrs) swam to get the Silver closely
followed by Cat to get the Bronze. Rosie Maddock (16yrs) rounded
off the session with a gutsy swim and took Gold. The boys then
furthered their distance swimming in the 1500m freestyle (14yrs) with
William taking the Silver and Thomas taking the Bronze, also getting
great PB’s along with Aaron. With the weather not easing in the
afternoon, neither were the medals. Lois and Aimee got the respective
Gold and Silver in the 800m freestyle (12yrs), and Cat picked up a
bronze in the 14yrs age group closely followed by Hannah. Findlay got
another Silver in the 400m freestyle, narrowly missing out on a Gold,
whilst Andrew King got a great PB together with Thomas and Aaron. David
Smith ended the meet with a grand finale and picked up a Bronze medal.

STIRLING LC TRAINING
The long course (swimming)
training at Stirling turned out to be a very enjoyable experience for
all. The weather was fine which meant yours truly wore shorts for
the whole day, Glyn having to wear a scarf due to inability to cope
with temperatures in the twenties.
The morning started with a
game of who is in the right bus before sedately pulling out of the
carpark Stirling bound. Gayle led the way closely pursued by Glyn
with yours truly checking for any unruly swimmers being deposited on
the roadside.
First stop Glendoick Garden
Centre with Peter Holmes and Glyn demonstrating to the rest the art of
speed breakfast roll eating.
Onto Stirling, and in the
pool for 10 sharp Kevin, Manivanh and Gayle performing admirably
poolside giving North Ayrshire a run for their money in adjoining
lanes. Glyn and Garry had meantime mysteriously dissappeared with
the first aid kit only to be quickly called into action.
The first user of the Garioch
first aid kit was David Smith, Glyn turned up within the 10 minute NHS
deadline and was then seen to vanish leaving only a trail of damp grass
???
The only real casualty of the
morning was Peter who was now mastering the art of keeping the
breakfast roll down.
And so to lunch or avoid the
wasp as it became known to Orla and Lois. Emily invented a new
sport of hurl the apple core at the hockey players and Kevin tried to
blend into the grass out of embarrasment at the same time. A
quick walk around the lake to loosen up the muscles and then into Land
Training led by Glyn everything aches before I start Freeman.
The Hula Hoop competition
looked to be a 2 horse race between Lois and Peter until it was spotted
that Peter had been using an illegal hoop and Lois Hulaad to an easy
victory. The chin up competition was a 2 horse race for the boys
with David my back is ok now taking it by 2 short necks from William,
the ladies competition being an easy victory for Rosie. I would
stress both competitions were carried under FIG rules and strict
supervision.
Onto the afternoon Stirling
pool session with Kevin, Manivanh and Glyn leading the way, Gayle on
minutes of meetings and Garry preparing for the sponsored sleep.
A couple of freak injuries cut finger to Nicole and muscle strain to
Joseph carrying out in situ lane rope adjustments (stewards enquiry
still needed).
The swimmers, I am reliably
informed by Kevin, all performed admirably and were now getting ready
for Supper. The highlight of the evening being the sight of 15
Garioch swimmers sprinting towards and then into Jimmy Cheungs !! , the
adults and a few more discerning swimmers walking another 100 yards to
the Chinese Restaurant that had actually been booked for the evening.
Within 10 minutes of our arrival the chef was struggling to cope, all
swimmers were ensuring that the calorie count was restored and it was
not easy to see if the chef was going to come out on top.
However, I will leave it to everyone's imagination as to the overall
winner in the food eating stakes.
The journey
home proved to be relatively uneventful, with quiet swimmers in my bus
anyway. Kevin had to be roused to help me find the fuel cap and
then it was back to base slightly later than planned but with everyone
having enjoyed their day. My thanks go out to all the adults that
helped but particularly to the swimmers who once again proved to be a
credit to GASC
