Message from down-under
Rory and Helen Thomson training in Oz, Gael (their
mum) sent this update along with picture of the pool they train at, not
dissimilar to Inverurie pool! - Web-Ed
Attached is a picture of one of the pools at Challenge Stadium where the kids swim with West Coast Swim Club. There are 3 fifty metre pools, 2 x 8 lanes and 1 x 10 lane. The kids train for [Rory] 3 or 4 x 75 mins and [Helen] 3 x 60 mins. They train at 05.30 and 16.00. The coaches are good and keep the kids working hard all through the session. Every 2 weeks there are time trials, Rory is taking plenty time off his Scottish times now and Helen is getting some reasonable times. The Australian kids are highly motivated to win with having 6 swimmers in West Coast that are Olympians and came home with medals this year. I did time keeping at the last time trials, fast and furious!
You can find the swim club via WASA [West
Australian Swimming Association]
On another watery subject, the kids are taking
surfing lessons with the school, another 06.30 on the beach morning ! At
least it's warm here.
Send our best regards to all at Garioch, Rory
and Helen proudly wear their tbags at the time trials. Draws some comments
from expats!

Robert Hayes won Gold in boys 11/12 years 100m freestyle and Imogen Jones also won gold in the girls 10 years and under 100m backstroke. In the same age group for boys, Alastair Miley just missed out on the medals but in improving his personal best time in the 100 freestyle by 15 seconds, he too set a new club record for 9 year old boys. PRIMARY SCHOOLS' GALA REPORTThe annual Primary Schools' Gala took place at Inverurie Pool on Saturday 12 June. With more teams and swimmers entered than ever before the atmosphere was electric and the noise incredible. Approximately 180 children from 10 different schools took part, many had never swum in a competition before but everyone had a great time and gave their all. This years gala took place with the assistance of a grant from Aberdeenshire Sports Council (see new link on links page) and sponsorship for the certificates from LogicaCMG. Officials and helpers from Garioch and other swimming clubs helped on the night. The eventual winners in a very close competition were Alford Primary School, closely followed by Kellands, Meldrum and Strathburn. Participating schools included Daviot, Keithall, Kemnay, Kintore, Market Place and Oyne. Full results are on way to schools.
